Poem: Soft Hearts

Soft Hearts

We have good memories so we can dip into them,
with a gold cup, filled to the brim,
overflowing with the day's sweetness,
poured upon the hair, flowing deeply,
transformed, to live again.

Soft hearts, gentle hands
take these thoughts away
burdened no more by
what I see or hear.

There is a dawn, radiant,
bursting in on the dreams
to create that new day,
and fresh memories
to wash us when they're called.

Soft hearts, gentle hands...

Song: Faith Our Victory

Faith, Our Victory
My heart believes in all God says, His Living Word in me,
I seek His face, stand in His grace, no matter what I see. ^
You are my King, with whom I live, and move in sonship now, w
and stand before Your Presence, Lord, forever I will bow.
I cast my crown before Your feet, and worship at Your throne,
And what I have I give to You, in this I'm not alone.
My Majesty and my Delight, a cry to Thee I give,
To see this day, for which I pray; in Your Word do I live.
The prophets voice, Your Spirit moves, outpouring on our hearts. No matter what the circumstance, from You we'll not depart. We look to Thee, the God of truth, open our eyes to see, Our faith is only in Your Word, and faith, our victory.
Sung to the tune of "America, the Beautiful"

Poem: If I Knew Then

01/05/08

If I knew then what I know now
I'd have cleaned the house,
washed the windows,
watered the yard.
I'd have called my sons and sister
and talk about our dreams
if I knew then what I know now.

I heard the rain, calling, join me
in this celebration, twirl and
dance, laugh, and sing
yell hello to the heavens,
wave to neighbors,
jump up and down
hug the postman
greeted everyone with a smile
if I knew then what I know now

I traveled far in thoughts and hopes
never wanting to leave the softness of
my comforter, the fragrance from my pillow,
the quiet of the rooms at night
a pantry full of sweets I should have eaten
caring less for a balanced diet
if I knew then what I know now.

I will always love the Special One
and cherish her in my memory
look again at her smiling innocence
radiating from the living room,
dinner table, garden
the wave goodbye would never end
as we once again embraced
if I knew then what I know now.

Dirt Plus

Hand  with trowel plus
trowel with dirt plus
pot with flowers
equals a very dirty shirt

Hose with water plus
Water with plants plus
Plants with sun
Equals very wet pants

Sun on head
covered by hat
can't keep the sweat away
Face all damp
No solution to that!

Hummingbird

Hummingbirds rest on the blooms as they
harvest nectar meant for their young ones
but first a flight through the mist of early morning
watering, perhaps gathering refreshment for
those who await her return.

Whir of tiny wings and invisible feathers
as the hummingbirds hover near flowers
that are inviting them to share in the spring bounty
urging them to enjoy their sweetness.

Blues, greens and yellows blur together
and when you listen carefully (hush)
one can hear the wings flutter
like a small fan.

Up, down, sideways,
nothing can stop the sweet adventure
as the hummingbird
darts back to the hidden nest
and waiting family

Out of the Way! We are Important!

Penny and Misty, have a tale to tell
about their high adventures
as they think they can smell
other dogs, even children,
they don't dare let them pass
in hope that their barking
will make the moment last.

Down the ramp run these Corgis, as loud as can be,
stopped by the gate they still bark earnestly
Impatient with how slow we are to respond
Come on, they shout, make haste, make haste
Lest they miss sniffing a pooch
or greeting the FedEx truck...what a waste!

Their day's not complete 'til they see Mary Jo,
they'll bark to ensure our movement's not slow
“Let us out of the house to meet our fair maiden!”
they demand as they race for their white picket fence
to see her deliver the latest of letters, the more often the better

Let us chase what we see, if the other agrees
on a cause for this race there must be something to see!
through back door and deck, they run like the dickens
aren't you glad we don't live in a farm full of chickens?

Our Gardener Who Makes Pretty

Powered by croissants, tea, and berries aplenty
our intrepid dear gardener is ready to shoo away
the next squirrel she sees with an eye to bite down
on her new tomatoes she wants to harvest, still round.

Her agenda is set, leaving the weeds for when she can get
up the embankment to pull at those roots
(nothing will stop her in her rubber garden boots!)
but today she is planting to fill in some bare spots
shoring up what is pretty, despite the day getting hot.

Digging the hole, deciding the depth,
She's busy making sure the plant gets great health
when she leaves it to blossom and grow
in her garden, so lovely, her garden to show.

Poem: There Are Those Who Said He Met the Future

There are those said he met the future and those who said his future never came
There are those who regret his passing And those who washed their hands
There are those who had drawn a line And those who walked altogether
There are those he soothed egos And those who never could be tamed
But in the end, what's the diff, If we are alone when we leave And are greeted as we arrive How close we are on this side Will shadow our love on the other
Hardest thing about growing old
Is remembering the past:
The youth, the zeal, no end to time
Now it's age, resting, and numbered days
Pushed and rolled to the end? Or pulled and dragged through the years? My choice or God's, my steps ordained? Will an award await, or an exiled eternity?
Yet, the years continue to pass
And memories of past victories and success
Become a haunting, asleep or awake
No escaping the pointed finger, accusing voices
Where every your heart is,
There is the treasure,
And that is tough to clarify
When your heart has led you a dozen ways
One would hope for a dozen treasures

Poem: The Bike Path

J.B.S. October 1989
The Bike Path
Looking up into the sky, eucalyptus silhouetted against the horizon framing the sunset between boughs.
Mockingbirds chatter with voices not theirs Hikers sharing thoughts and cares Looking for another to carry a burden too great to bear alone.
Watch your steps on the paths edge,
where dogs have left a reminder of their house training.
The bike! the bike! whizzing by, ouch if I got hit luckily they say "on your left" as they pass.
Leaving thoughts of the day behind — good or bad — tossed aside, beyond reach.
Prayers said there, amidst the suns adieu, Holding hands, just to be a little closer, and more one than being apart.
Its lonely by ourselves, hurrying to end the strain of hills and the quiet Stopping for a brief respite at a crest that's down hill and up again, the last push before sight of home and a meal, yet to be prepared.
Of such topics are moments made
and trusts deepened through the joy...
and tears wash the memories
as clean as the leaves after a rain
unlocking depths no person has wanted to enter
as we face our days of anguish and triumph.
Sharing a hello to a passerby
becomes an intrusion into a world so different
than all those who walk that path
But all our needs are the same — good health —
and thus the bond that enlightens every heart.

Poem: What Friends are For

J.B.S. September 1989
Friends
There's that shoulder when I need it Hand to hold on walks at sunset conversation over troubles and ecstacies.
A leisurely meal of homemade vegetable soup
and fresh wheat bread
(Shadows of bowls and plates moving against the table
from the flickering light of candles)
and a revealing of the heart amidst the sound of silverware.
We lost track of who owes what to whom a long time ago
and ended up just being generous, striving to do unto one another.
Shaving down square pegs to fit in that
heart-shaped space.Jt hurts at times
but that's how we change.
Despite the sawdust on the ground,
evidence of the pushing and shoving to make things work
(the way they should!)
That's what friends are for (at least that's what they say)
and it seems to work...and we want it to work...most of the time.
Two hands
are better than one (gets the job done sooner)
Two heads
are better than one (to think things through)
Two hearts

are better than one (to drink of the Spirit)
