Essay: Being Gay in History

Treatise on Homosexuality
By Jim Stewart

It is true that there are just a few references in the Bible that discuss homosexuality, a half dozen verses in the New Testament spoken primarily by the Apostle Paul.

What does God really think about homosexuality? We can only interpret verses, depending on the translation.

listed certain behaviors such as murder, theft, adultery, homosexuality in his admonition that “of which you were, “ speaking in the past tense. There were homosexuals in the New Testament Church, but Paul’s reference precludes that behavior, along with the others.

Through history various faiths have condemned homosexuals as committing sin against God. There are Christian believers, and unbelievers, who speak out against homosexuality. The retort has been if homosexuality was such a sin then why didn’t Jesus mention it in his sermons?

In the Old Testament, Israelis are surrounded by towns in which homosexuality was practiced and condoned as part of the worship of  Baal, Moab, and _____. Those who worshipped often did so in front of a particular pillar designed to look like a penis. This was part of the fertility rituals they practiced, showing how the penis is central to giving life. God urged the Jews to destroy all the surrounding population, those who practiced these things.
